Remember Their Sacrifice - Veterans' Day 2008
November 10, 2008

To Give
They give to us their future ... submit to us tender years,
bequeath to us days which do not hold the measure of realization,
lives that fly the course of intimacy with one definitive breath
They give
hopes whose run will no longer chase a callow heart
until that heart winds a promised path
To own
none but these unpolished days
faith and silence press time upon their heavy lids
a shadow of tomorrow,
the measure of what road laid ahead before this hour
A brother’s arms to embrace
a brother’s hand to release
trickle of water over lips
High sun blinds as he’s tossed into the air.
Wiggling,
laughing too loud
he lands in his father’s hands.
One more time Daddy. . . One more time.
as sands sift through fingers
Give
Your tears
Give
A prayer of evolution

Thank to my Uncle John ... who served during the Cold War: Army
Thank to my husband, Marty ... who served during the Viet Nam War: Army
Thank you to my son, Johnny, now serving: Marines ....
... and to his long time friends George & Brian now serving: Marines
Thank you to our friend, Camille and her husband Mike ... now serving: Navy
Thank you to our neighbors, Bill and Alex now serving: Army ......
...and friend of the family, Eric : Marines
Thank you to all who have served and are now serving in our armed forces. Thank you for faithfully and selflessly protecting our freedom . God Bless.

I there is anyone you would like to thank on this Veterans' Day ... please feel free to do so here.
a silence . . . without name
he slips out of penny-loafers,
shiny new coin catching his eye
tugs at woolen socks
tucking them deep into the toe
shoes dangling from two fingers
God is quiet
so he stands as if time has ended
he and the sea suspended in its ebb, waiting to surge
gulls shriek over head
setting free the flow
and he studies their commotion squint-eyed
against the declining sun
placing his shoes gently on the sand
he rights himself
cursing his arthritis
with a hand on his hip
and so begins
one step at a time
one foot falls front of the other
the walk into this final baptism
cleansed
khakis clinging to his calves
toes gripping the sand
he remembers the force of the tide
on the sea’s horizon
he spies God’s sails ~ as he did then
and his eye is captive
he turns
scrutinizing the shore
"here . . .
as far as one could see”
huddled
the silenced and littered ... assembled,
gawking into the face of humanity
lip quivers
chin drops
looking down at the sea grasses
now wrapped around his legs
he abides in the truth
"it was here"
he first prayed
but today
turning his back to the surf
he listens to the reply
of the breaking waves
and the shifting sands
of Normandy

While browsing YouTube I found ... and a poem
October 11, 2008
... Please Remember Me
Sung by Loreena McKinnit
A tribute to our fallen troops .... put together by mausergirl
The Ultimate Sacrifice by Lisa Milligan ... than you Lisa for sharing you poem with us!
Because of you
we can get up every morning
and go to work
run errands at lunch time
drive through McDonald’s
fill up our gas tanks
and make it back to work
just in time
Because of you
we don’t have houses
we have homes
where we walk through the door
the dog jumps on us
as do our children
we hug our spouses
and smell dinner cooking
Because of you
we have artwork from Kindergarten
and shopping lists
hanging on the refrigerator
along with pictures held up with tape or magnets
school pictures, pictures of Gramma and Grampa
pictures of babies, kittens, and teenagers
dressed for the prom
Because of you
we gather around the dinner table
play in the backyard with our kids
feed the cat, walk the dog
splash water on our children in the tub
then tuck them into bed with hugs and kisses
and reassurance there are no monsters
in closets or under beds
Because of you
with the children asleep
and the dishes all done
men make love to their wives
wives make love to their husbands
and drift off to sleep intertwined
feeling life is good, all is well
and we are safe
Because of you
we are safe
we can sit in fields watching our kids play soccer
or in the stands watching or kids play hockey
we can grill hamburgers and hot dogs
eat potato salad and cole slaw
drink ice cold beer
and play pool while the kids run through sprinklers
Because of you
we must remember
to have a moment of silence on Memorial Day
to remember your sacrifice
and your family’s
and to thank you that we get to live these lives
sometimes eventful, sometimes uneventful
but always full of possibilities
Because of you

You're a Grand Old Flag
Music and Lyrics by George M. Cohan
You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Every heart beats true
Need the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or break.
Should all acquaintance be forgotton,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Every heart beats true
Need the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or break.
Should all acquaintance be forgotton,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Note #3/ Mother ... upon being/Marine Moms
perhaps if we hold on so tight
to each our smile
and laughter we laugh too loud
perhaps if we hug one more doubt
with arms that wrap round
old photographs and toads and baseball bats
we will stand unabashed
brazen
against the tide relinquished
form our own ebb and flow
perhaps if we kiss
each our cheek
we kiss the cheek of our sons marching

How to fold the U.S. Flag ....
I've actually found several sites with instruction of step by step instruction on how to fold the Flag, however USFlag.org is my favorite link:
http://www.usflag.org/foldflag.html

Flags in front of school district office...
Old Glory and Marine Corps Flag ...
Here is a portion of the flag ceremony as quoted from USFlag.com:
The meaning of each fold:- The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
- The second fold is a symbol of our belief in the eternal life.
- The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for the defense of our country to attain a peace throughout the world.
- The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance.
- The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong."

- The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
- The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
- The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered in to the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on mother's day.
- The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
- The tenth fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.
- The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost
- When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God we Trust."

Old Glory along 101
July 25, 2008
Driving home from Camp Pendleton I just started snapping picture of the flag along 101. I took many more pictures than are posted here, but driving along at 70 miles per hour by the time I snapped the picture the flag was out of the frame. Those that did captured the flag were pretty bad .... so i decorated them up a bit. All in all, I simply wanted to share the fact that the Red, White and Blue parades along Route 101.
Some of the flags are really hard to see .... just look at it like you would "Where's Waldo"

I AM THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
By Howard Schnauber
I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is "Old Glory".
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.
I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
My head is a little higher,
My colors a little truer.
I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped -- I am saluted.
I am loved -- I am revered.
I am respected -- and I am feared.
I have fought in every battle of every war
for more then 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg,
Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill,
the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome
and the beaches of Normandy, Guam,
Okinawa, Korea, and Vietnam.
I was there. I led my troops.
I was dirty, battle-weary and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me
And I was proud.
I have been burned, torn and trampled
on the streets of countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.
I have been soiled upon, burned, torn
and trampled on the streets of my country.
And when it's by those whom I've served in battle -- it hurts.
But I shall overcome -- for I am strong.
I have slipped the bonds of Earth
and stood watch over the uncharted frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness
to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.
When I am torn into strips
and used as bandages
for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I am flown at half-mast to honor my soldier,
Or when I lie in the trembling arms
of a grieving parent at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,
I am proud.
MY NAME IS "OLD GLORY".
LONG MAY I WAVE.
DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN,
LONG MAY I WAVE.
